September 26 The Old 97, a Southern Railway train officially known as the Fast Mail, derails near Danville, Va., killing engineer Joseph “Steve” Broady and ten other railroad and postal workers.  Many believe Broady had been ordered to speed to make up for lost time.

Metro Council Announces Endorsements

The Metro Washington Council on Thursday announced the following endorsements for the November 2016 Election: Washington, D.C.: Robert White for At-Large, Vincent Gray in Ward 7, and Trayon White in Ward 8. “These candidates and their vision and agenda are very much in line with our vision and agenda for the District of Columbia,” said Metro Council president Jackie Jeter.

New Stewards Training

Good afternoon Sisters & Brothers: The Local will be holding a "New Stewards" training Oct.18 & 19, 2016 at the Local hall. The time will be from 6:00pm - 8:00pm. Please call the hall @ 202-291-1500, before Oct.7, 2016, if you are interested in becoming a Steward.

Upcoming EISP

Verizon intends to offer the Special EISP. Volunteers will be accepted as necessary to meet business needs. Packages will be distributed to employees beginning today 8-23-2016. The volunteer period will begin on August 30, 2016 and end on September 28, 2016. If you are accepted for the "Special EISP" the off payroll date is October 9, 2016.

August 19 First edition of IWW Little Red Song Book published - 1909   Some 2,000 United Railroads streetcar service workers and supporters parade down San Francisco’s Market Street in support of pay demands and against the company’s anti-union policies.

GAO Contracted Janitors Authorize Strike:

Dozens of contracted cleaners at the Government Accountability Office have voted to authorize a strike to protest their employer’s proposal to stop paying into the workers’ pension fund. Their union says the decision by Creative Management Technologies (CMT) would undermine retirement security for cleaners, many of whom have worked at the GAO for decades.
